Dr Backonja joined Lifetree (now CRI Lifetree) in March of 2011 as Medical Director, Lifetree Center for Neuroscience Research. Following his neurology residency at the University of Wisconsin Medical School Dr. Backonja went on to multidisciplinary pain fellowship training also at UW Medical School, during which he started his research training. Upon completion of the fellowship, he accepted the position of a faculty at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, where he currently holds the title of emeritus professor at the University of Wisconsin and Pain Treatment and Research Center. Dr. Backonja’s clinical and research interest has been neuropathic pain in its entirety, from pathophysiology to treatment.
His research has resulted in many publications in peer reviewed journals including Pain, Analgesia & Anesthesia, Lancet Neurology, JAMA, Neuroscience, Clinical Journal of Pain, Journal of Pain and Brain Research, just to mention a few. His educational efforts lead to series of articles and book chapters, and he made numerous didactic presentations at national and international meetings. He serves on editorial boards of Pain, Clinical Journal of Pain, Journal of Pain, European Journal of Pain and Pain Medicine. He also served as a regular and an ad-hoc reviewer for NIH and international governmental agencies.
